On the path to a journalism career that started with a bang, Brian Patrick Higgins played a part in the most warped Sunday Mass in the history of Catholicism; faked his own college graduation; found himself at the center of a riot of bat-wielding baseball players; narrowly missed a point-blank shot to the head; and found himself as an unwitting assistant to The Grim Reaper. In mourning following a litany of funerals, our protagonist meets the woman of his dreams on the very day he inaugurates what is now one of California’s most popular hiking clubs. After decades of low-hanging fruit on the relationship vine, will he find love at altitude? You might just crack a rib laughing, or shed a few tears, en route to the answer.

Loaned to a friend and did not get it back for six months. Middle section about the writer moving from novice to journeyman to pro news reporter is some of the best writing I have seen in a long time. The book is not substantial enough to warrant interest in the family reunion stuff -- we have as readers not known the writer long enough to care that much and this book is quite thin. Re-perusing the journalism segments it seems pretty clear much is omitted; it would have been nice to have a bit more of that. Also the dispassionately observed stuff about other characters the writer has encountered make for some of the best reading. For one, the reader is granted some relief from the constant "this is about me" that is a danger for memoires. For another, the guy has known some pretty far-out people. Enjoyed reading about the nearly fatal consequences of honest reporting on high school sports in the Deep South.Product details

A Good Look Before Dark A Warped Memoir Brian Patrick Higgins 9781512396935 Books Reviews
I found it hilarious, poignant, and self deprecating all at the same time.Rare in a book I would say. Was most definitely an entertaining page turner that I think allows you to both laugh and cry not only at his life but ones own. Well worth the effort.
You could say I'm a tad bit prejudice growing up with Brian thus continuously nagging him about putting his journalistic talent to good use..... This was well worth the wait and he certainly showed me. What a ride down memory lane and into the warped cobwebs of a genius mind! Touching yet relevant, if this disappoints any reader I'll gladly refund your purchase!
A lively narration of the author's hilarious shenanigans through his life. An insightful look into his twisted mind. A really entertaining and touching read. The witty humor and passionate narration will keep you reading well past Dark!
A Good Look Before Dark offers a lively account of the rich and varied life experiences of sports writer turned hiking guru, Brian Patrick Higgins. A free spirit and force of nature, Brian has always lived life on his own terms. Poignant and deeply funny, Brian reflects on his strange and remarkable life journey, recounting personal triumphs, tragedies, and the interesting characters he met along the way. Above all, Mr. Higgins is a wonderful storyteller. This book was a pleasure to read.
Brian Patrick Higgins made me laugh out loud, smile and tear up as I traveled with him through his life's adventures. I could connect with the sarcasm, humor and emotions of the different decades. Each chapter/story brought a little message for reflection and then I anxiously had to read to find out what happens next. This book was entertaining as well as insightful!
I thoroughly enjoyed each phase of this writer's story; from his innocent sweet beginnings to the crazy adventures he beautifully displays and how he found his way to peace in the CA hills surrounding the Bay Area. Be warned, you may also find yourself rolling your eyes at his ego at times and the ending made me sad. Sad because of how beautifully written the end is and that is was the end of his story. I hope he continues to evolve and share part 2 with us. 5 stars for sure.
A Good Look Before Dark was a great read and extremely entertaining. Anyone who has logged miles on their own life's trail will relate to this book. Your pendulum of emotions will swing from laugh out loud funny to tears welling in your eyes. The author writes with quick wit and humor. He also has the ability to write with an honesty and tenderness that touches his readers. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Get a Good Look Before Dark.
